In this post about what to see in Santorini, just as we did with what we dedicated to what to see in Mykonos, what to see in Naxos and what to see in Paros, we want to make a summary of all the details and aspects that we believe are more important and must take into account, to travel to Santorini, one of the best Greek Islands, in addition to one of the most visited and tourist, which despite the first doubts, has ended up being one of our favorite places of this trip to Greece in 32 days .

Having been 4 full days, plus the days of transfers and, as we have done with the previous islands, we have preferred to make a single post, instead of a day to day, in which to collect all the data to organize the trip To Santorini and above all, enjoy to the fullest one of the places to see in Greece essential.

What to do in Santorini

How to go to Santorini

Ferry: One of the most appropriate and most used ways to get to Santorini, whether from Athens or another island, is undoubtedly the ferry.
In our case, when making this transfer from another island, we took a ferry from Paros to Santorini, with which you can make this journey between 2-3 hours, depending on the ferry you book, for about 60 euros per person and 50 euros the car of rent in Greece, in case you travel with this type of transport.
Keep in mind that you can book the ferry through the Greek islands here, considering that prices vary greatly, depending on the season, the type of ferry you choose and even the schedule you choose.

Ferry to Santorini

- Plane: Another option to travel to Santorini is flying to your airport. As with Mykonos, in this case, you can find direct flights, so this can be a great option, considering also that prices are usually very tight, not exceeding 50 euros per person on many occasions.
- Excursion / Tour: Although you can reach Santorini perfectly for free, if you want to know more about the island you can book this Santorini Getaway for 2 or more days, this 4-day Getaway to Mykonos and Santorini or this Aegean Islands Cruise .
If you want to make the transfer from Athens we recommend you read this post on how to go from Athens to Santorini.

Ferry to Santorini

As we mentioned before, one of the best options to travel to Santorini, especially if you are on another island, according to our experience in this Greece for free, is undoubtedly opt for the ferry through the Greek Islands.
You can find much more information about this specific transfer in the post we wrote about the ferry from Paros to Mykonos or how to get from Mykonos to Santorini.

Keep in mind that if you arrive in Santorini by ferry you will arrive at the new port of Fira, one of the most famous locations on the island, so if you do not have a rental car in Santorini to go to your accommodation or move around the island, You can manage it directly here, in one of the premises, or take the bus or taxi to take you to your accommodation and once there, assess the different options that exist in the localities.

How to go to Santorini

Best time to travel to Santorini

As with the rest of the islands we have visited on this trip, according to our experience, the best time to travel to Santorini includes spring and autumn, in addition to the months of June, July and August, taking into account that these The latter are already included in the high season, so in addition to finding the most crowded island, any type of service is usually much more expensive.

Taking this into account, it is interesting if you come in summer, book in advance, both the accommodation in Paros and the rental car and even the ferry, since during these months the availability is usually more limited.

How many days are needed to get to know Santorini

Taking into account all places to see in Santorini and the things that must be done, we would recommend you to dedicate to the island about 3-4 days minimum, to be able to enjoy it and above all, to live it with some tranquility, something that we believe is very necessary, since it is usually very crowded and it is appreciated to have some hours of tranquility.
If you have this time, you can also do the trekking from Fira to Oía and the Rock Skaros, in Imerogivli, two walks that we believe, show you another perspective of the island, less crowded but as much or more incredible.

Best hotel in Santorini. Where do i stay?

Something to keep in mind when organizing a trip to the most famous Greek island, is the place to stay, since although the distances are short, being in one place or another, it can be decisive when visiting and know the places to visit in Santorini.
That said, something important is to be aware that most accommodation in Santorini have high prices, especially if you are looking for options with views of the caldera. It is for this reason that, especially if you are traveling in high season, book early, to avoid cost overruns.

- Firostefani: This small village, next to Fira, is one of the best options to stay in Santorini, since in addition to having many catering services, of different prices, you can find accommodation with very good value- price.
In our case we stayed at Gaby Apartments, with an excellent location, right next to the famous Greek Orthodox church of the blue dome, which is one of the great attractions of the accommodation.

Accommodation in Firostefani

Gaby Apartments Terrace

- Fira: Another of the most demanded areas as accommodation in Santorini is Fira. Next to the previous one, this would be another of the most adjusted options in price, below Oía, which is usually the highest in price.
In our experience, if you have a car, staying in Fira or Firostefani is also more adjusted in price, quieter, since Oía is usually quite crowded, since it is the stop for all travelers and cruise passengers who arrive on the island.

Accommodation in Fira

- Oía: Without a doubt, the most prominent and most expensive location in Santorini. In our case, we believe that unless you come to enjoy the accommodation, it is not necessary to spend the high prices that these accommodations usually have, especially in high season.
In Fira or Firostefani you can find excellent options with views of the Caldera, at tighter prices, although logically and independently of this, it is best to look at the options, since there can always be some offer or option that fits what you are looking for.

Accommodation in Oía

Another option in Santorini is to choose to stay in an AirBnb apartment, with excellent options especially in the Oía area, where you have a discount of 35 euros through this link.

Car rental in Santorini

Although in Santorini, as in the rest of the islands there is public transport and in this case very adjusted in price, having a rental car is undoubtedly a success, since in this way you can enjoy total freedom of schedules and movements.
Also, as in the rest of the islands, you can opt for a motorcycle or quad, very extended options in the Greek islands that can also be a very good alternative.

Bus in Santorini

In Santorini, we had the experience of using the public bus, making the journey from Oía to Firostefani, after doing the trekking and we have to say that it is a very valid option, both for price and for the amount of journeys it covers.
The only bad thing is that in high season, in places like Oía or Fira, you might have to wait a long time, since buses usually fill up very easily.

What to see in Santorini in Greece

Although later we will leave several routes recommended by Santorini, depending on the days you have to know the island, before we want to leave you a selection of things to see and do in Santorini, so that you can know this incredible island knowing several details, to make it more comfortable and above all, optimal.

I heard

Meeting point for all travelers arriving in Santorini, Oía, known as Pano Meria by locals, has become in recent years a less quiet place than expected, due to the proliferation of accommodations, one considered as best sunsets in the world, and the current Instagram fashion, which has targeted the blue domes that dot the cliffs, as the objective of many of his photos.

I heard

Built on the slope of the cliff, with incredible views of the Caldera, walking its streets is mandatory, since it is in them where the main attraction of the town is found, increasingly saturated with restaurants and shops, which coexist with many of their houses, excavated in rock, which today have become luxury accommodation, in which you can not miss the small terrace with blue water pool, which compete in beauty with the waters of the Caldera, on the horizon .

Oía main street

Although as we told you the best thing about Oía is getting lost in its streets, looking for corners and little shops, we are sure that you will also want to take the typical photo in which the characteristic blue domes of the Greek Orthodox churches that dot the cliff come out.
Before going to the details, tell you that access to these churches is prohibited, as well as climbing to the rooftops or domes. In many cases, to reach them, you have to go through private areas, even jumping over walls or access doors. In most of them you will see that there are multiple prohibition cartels, since we have reached a point where the photo has more value than education or security, so even in some of the most famous points, there are now people ensuring that no one enters restricted access, either for being private or for security.
If despite this you want to take your picture, what we did was go very soon, at 6 in the morning, since we wanted to meet Oía without people and wait in the area of the domes, in which you can not pass, to Some owner would pass to ask permission to take a picture.
Both times we did it, they gave it to us without problems, asking us to close the doors when we left. From what we saw, starting at 8-9 in the morning doing this is impossible, since there are queues to take the picture, from the outside, because the area is already guarded.

I heard

Oia blue domes

The first thing you should know is that there are 2 blue domes, which are the most famous and most of the photos you will see are of the same, but from different perspectives. In the first one there are two domes and a kind of small bell tower, also blue and in the other perspective, the blue domes are seen, with a pink bell tower.
We leave you the location of the perfect places to have both views. In case you do not have it very clear, do not worry since most travelers go, so you will end up finding the point.

Domes of Oía in Santorini

Oía Castle

Another of Oía's best known points, especially at sunset, is the castle, which you can access after crossing the network of streets that seem to protect it from the agglomerations that usually form every day when the time comes the sunset.
If you come at that time of day, we advise you to arrive here about 45 minutes in advance, as many people usually concentrate at this point and leave about 15-30 minutes after people start leaving the place.
This will allow you to enjoy it with more tranquility and most importantly, do not be overwhelmed, since there are days when it seems impossible that there are so many people in a single point of Santorini.

Oía Castle

Sunset from Oía Castle

Another option, if you see that Oía Castle is very crowded, is to stay in the lower part of it, where there are usually not so many people and there is some more space, as well as on the surrounding trails.

Old Port of Oía

In addition to visiting Oía, we recommend you to go to the old port of Santorini, called Ommoudi, where you will find several highly recommended taverns, in addition to some fishing boats, which remind us of the past of this beautiful town, which in 1956 was devastated by the volcano and that Little by little, he recovered to show himself as we see her today.

Ommoudi

If you come to Oía by rental car you can reach Ammounia by car, parking directly in the area below or on the access road, on the shoulder, where you usually leave cars since the parking lot is too small for people who visit This area of Oía.
Another option is to go down (and go up) the 300 stairs that are from the area of the castle of Oía that lead directly to the port. In this case if you come to eat here, one of the most recommended places to do it in Oía, remember that later, you will have to go up to get back to the Oía area.

Ommoudi

At this point we would like to comment, that as happens in Fira, there are donkeys that make this journey up and down the stairs, to take tourists. Although we understand that this vision is very personal, we recommend you not to do so, making responsible tourism, since animals should not perform this type of activities.

Oía Bus Station

Although we understand that this is not a point of tourist interest, we believe it is convenient to locate it (we leave it on the map below), since it is the place where the bus will leave you and you will have to take it again.
We recommend you check the schedules and arrive 15-20 minutes before, especially in high season, if you do not want to have to wait 1 or 2 buses, since especially this route, it usually goes full.
The price is 1.80 euros per person to go from Oía to Firostefani and the journey is approximately 30 minutes.

Also keep in mind that right next door is Nikos Place Gril House, one of the most recommended restaurants, both for quality and price, as it is incredibly cheap to be in one of the most expensive places in Greece.
In the menu they have many dishes of traditional Greek cuisine and as we say, all with very tight prices. We ordered a gyro of chicken and one of kebab, each for three euros plus a large bottle of water, soda and two coffees for 14 euros.

Nikos Place Gril House

Sunset in Oía

One of the most incredible moments you can live in Oía, is undoubtedly its sunset. Although you can see it from several points, we recommend you do it from the area of the Castle of Oía, which we mentioned earlier or from the area of the viewpoint of the blue domes, which although from another perspective, there are incredible views.
A good option to watch the sunset if you do not have a car is to book this Excursion to Oia from Fira.

Sunset of Oía

Oía night

The day you come to see the sunset in Oía, we recommend extending the day a little and take advantage to enjoy this small town when night falls, at which time many of the city's most famous spots are deserted, to give away your prominence to leisure areas.
This moment is perfect for strolling through the network of streets, while the boiler starts splashing with the lights of the boats and the cliff turns into a Christmas tree, with thousands of lights from the different accommodations in the area.

Oía night

Oía night

Firostefani

Another of Santorini's most famous places is the small village of Firostefani, located right next to Fira. Known for hosting more affordable accommodation, Firostefani is also the place where you can see one of the most famous images of Santorini, that of the Greek Orthodox Church, with the boiler in the background.
This church is right next to Gaby Apartments, where we stay in Santorini and which has become one of our favorite accommodations in the world, as it has one of the best views in the world.

Firostefani

Fira

Known for being one of the mandatory stops in Santorini, Fira is also one of the favorite places for travelers to stay, as it usually has prices more adjusted than Oía in addition to having numerous places of restoration.
Learn more about Firostefani and Fira, in addition to our proposed route here.

Fira

Imerovigli

This small village, located next to Firostefani, is known for the famous Skaros trek, after which you will arrive at Ekklisia Theoskepasti, a beautiful church, which we would say, is the most amazing location we have ever seen.
Although the village does not have much to do, only for the trekking, which will not take you more than an hour, it is worth making a stop, as it is one of the essential places to see in Santorini.
We will talk about this walk later, in the section of things to do in Santorini.

Imerovigli

Pyrgos

This small town is a perfect stop on any route through the interior of Santorini, to know that other more local aspect, which has been lost in some way in places like Oía or Fira that have surrendered to tourism, forgetting in some way that more traditional aspect that still preserve towns like Pyrgos.
Although it is worth spending a few hours, if you have visited Naxos or Paros, we have to say that this small town is not so attractive, although it is true that it is beautiful and worth visiting.

Pyrgos

Pyrgos

Megalochori

Only 2 kilometers by car from Pyrgos we find this small town also in the interior of Santorini which is highly recommended to visit on a route through all the tourist points of the interior of the island.
As in the rest of the villages of the Greek islands, we recommend looking for the parking lot that is signposted and is usually at the entrance of the town, which is free and although it is usually on the outskirts, it is still very close to the main tourist attractions.

Megalochori

Megalochori

Akrotori

This small town of Santorini is another recommended visit if you come to this area of the island, especially to combine with the Red Beach and with the visit to the old Akrotiri, the most important archaeological site of the island, that saving the distances , is known as the Greek Pompeii, since in it you will see the remains of the city, which was buried under the ashes after the eruption of the Santorini volcano.
The ticket price is 12 euros per person and you can leave the car in the parking lot directly opposite, for 4 euros.
If you do not have a car you can book this excursion from Fira with a guide in Spanish.

Akrotiri

Akrotiri details

Vothonas

This small town in the interior of the island of Santorini is known for its churches, which seem to be excavated in the rock, as are their houses. Although in our experience we would not dare to say that it is essential, we do believe that if you are in the area and have time, it is worth making a stop to discover these traditional villages of the island, which you will not be able to see in the area of Hey

Vothonas

Emporium

We would dare to say that Emporio is the least known inland town of Santorini and yet, at least to us, it has been the one we liked the most.
Keep in mind that you can park in the downtown area for free, in the main square, from which you can continue walking through the streets until you reach its historic center, which is where the traditional houses are located .

Emporium

Emporium

If you can, be sure to stop at To Kafenedaki tou Emboriou, a small café where you can try the best baklavas in the world.

Akrotiri lighthouse in Santorini

At one end of the island of Santorini we find the Akrotiri lighthouse, a perfect place to enjoy the sunset, although we, due to lack of time, prefer to do so from Fira, Firostefani and Oía.
You can reach the end of the road by car, then walk about 100 meters to the lighthouse. Although the views really are excellent, we believe that they are much more worthwhile than there are in a viewpoint just before, about 500 meters, from where you have a complete perspective of the Caldera.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Views from the Akrotiri Lighthouse

Santorini Beaches

Another attraction and places to see in Santorini are its beaches. Although without reaching level Of those we saw in Naxos, Paros or Mykonos, we believe that depending on the days you have to visit the island, they can be part of a perfect plan, combining some of them with a route through some of the villages inside the island.

Red Beach

We could say that this is the most tourist and best known beach in Santorini, besides being the most curious, for being red. Yes, you heard correctly. The color of its sand is red, as is the wall that protects it, making it a truly unique image that contrasts with the blue of its waters and that has made it one of the most visited places in Santorini.

Red Beach

In our experience, this beach is not particularly comfortable to spend a full day, since it is usually very unprotected from the wind, so we recommend you come to see it, take a bath and continue with the route inside the island or To some other beach.
The Red Beach has ample parking, in which you can park for free and in which there is a bar service, a few meters before arriving and afterwards at the end several beach bars where you can buy fast food and soft drinks.
Keep in mind that although access to the Red Beach is quite easy, you have to walk a sandy path in the final section, so if you go with flip flops, it is important to be careful, to avoid slipping.

Red Beach Santorini

Khataros

This small beach located very close to Oía, about 2 kilometers, is a small beach of black volcanic sand, which despite its location so close to the busy Oía, does not usually receive many visits, so it can be perfect to spend a afternoon or a few hours of beach.
At the top of the beach you will find a free land parking where you can leave the car, then walk a short path that runs next to a bar, until you go down to the beach.

Khataros

Perissa

This black sand beach is another of the places to see in Santorini and one of its most famous beaches, since it receives a large volume of young people, who comes to enjoy this area of the island with a more festive atmosphere that does not known Oía or Fira.

Perissa

Kamari

At 13 kilometers by car from Perissa, since you can not surround the cliff, this beach is also black sand, which can be a perfect option if you prefer to escape from the sometimes crowded Perissa.

What to do in Santorini

In addition to all the places to see in Santorini, of which we have talked about previously, there are some activities to do in Santorini that we want to highlight and that we believe, are a perfect complement to the visit to the towns and beaches of the island.

Walk from Firostefani to Fira

This walk, which we talked about when we mentioned these two small towns, is in place of doubt, one of the walks or walks that you cannot miss in Santorini.
We recommend you do it both day and night, since you can enjoy two totally different places, where the night seems to dress them up, on the edge of the cliff and with unforgettable views of the Caldera de Santorini.

Fira

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Known for being one of the most recommended walks in Santorini, if you have a morning, it is one of the things to do in Santorini that you cannot miss. The recommended route is from Fira to Oía, in which approximately 10 kilometers are traveled, bordering the caldera with spectacular views, which from time to time, are diminished by the churches that you find along the way.

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Keep in mind that the tour can be done in approximately 2: 30h, although the average, if you do it with tranquility, is about 4-5 hours, stopping to take photos, rest and above all, enjoy one of the things that Make in Santorini more recommended.

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Trekking from Fira to Oía

You will see that the route passes through Imerogivli, where the Skaros rock is, another of Santorini's most famous walks, which we will talk about next. Although it can be done perfectly together with the walk from Fira to Oía, extending the route about 2-3 kilometers and an hour or so of walking, whenever you have time, we would recommend you do it in two mornings, to be able to enjoy both walks separately .

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Trekking from Fira to Oía

If you are staying in Fira or Firostefani, you can return again from Oía by bus for 1.80 euros per person. Buses leave from the main square of the town, which you can see on the map above in a journey of approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Tips for trekking from Fira to Oía

- The best recommendation we can give you for this trekking from Fira to Oía is to leave very early in the morning. In our experience, it is best to go out at dawn, as this will avoid the hottest hours.
- Keep in mind that the path from Fira to Oía is approximately 10 kilometers and will take you about 4-5 hours taking it easy. If you want to do it with a high pace, it will not take you more than 3 hours to complete the entire tour.
- The road is very affordable for anyone with a medium physical attitude, so you should not worry. Although it is better to wear a closed shoe, if you go in flip flops, you will have no problems, except for a couple of sections in which the road is sand and rocks, so it can be annoying.

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Trekking from Fira to Oía

- Remember to bring water and something to eat, since there is nowhere you can buy from Imerogivli to Oía.
- As we mentioned earlier, we did the Skaros trekking and this separately, since we believe that it is a much more rested way of seeing the two places, although as we said we can do both perfectly in the same day, dedicating one more hour.

Trekking from Fira to Oía

Trekking Skaros in Imerogivli

Another of the most famous walks in Santorini is the one that takes place in Imerogivli and takes you to the impressive Ekklisia Theoskepasti, a church that appears by surprise, since it is not visible until you reach it and is one of those to see in Santorini more amazing.
As in the previous one, we recommend you to start the hike as soon as possible, since when the sun clenches the route it becomes more complicated, especially the flight of stairs, which you will have to climb again to return to Imerovigli after bordering the rock.

Trekking Skaros in Imerogivli

Trekking Skaros in Imerogivli

To take into account that it is a very easy road, only tired by the flight of stairs, so it can be done perfectly in flip flops, being careful only in the last section, which is more slippery.
Once you reach Skaros base, keep in mind that there are two ways to get to the church; climbing the stairs that go up to the rocks and that look perfectly as you approach or surround the rock, crossing a path, which although it seems narrow from a distance, it is perfectly feasible to do it even having vertigo.
In our case, we made the way up the stairs and around the rock, a perfect option to enjoy the two perspectives, which we believe is the most successful.

Trekking Skaros in Imerogivli

Although the views are impressive throughout the tour, without a doubt the most spectacular thing is to reach Ekklisia Theoskepasti, one of the most incredible churches on the island, which has become at least for us, one of the places to see in Santorini more impressive.

Ekklisia Theoskepasti

Ekklisia Theoskepasti

You probably see people trying to reach the highest area of the rock, we do not try, but from what we saw, having to practically climb and not have any protection, it is something we do not recommend, unless you have experience and above all, do not have vertigo.
The walk can take you about an hour and a half, taking you or with a lot of tranquility.
As we mentioned earlier, there are many people who do this hike together with the famous trek that goes from Fira to Oía, although we recommend you if you have a couple of days, do it separately, since this way you can do it with more tranquility.

Ekklisia Theoskepasti

Sunsets in Santorini

Another of the things to see and do in Santorini that you can not miss, are the sunsets and it is not in vain, they say that they are some of the best in the world, especially those who live in Oía every day of the year.
We leave you what are for us the three best options, which we are sure, will not disappoint you. You can see the data of each of them in the explanation we have given previously of the location.

Routes through Santorini

The most important thing to organize a route through Santorini, is to know how many days are necessary or would be adequate to enjoy the places to see in Santorini, in a relaxed way. As we mentioned before, according to our experience, we would recommend 2-3 days, to combine a cultural and also relaxing route, in which to intersperse some visit to inland villages, with some day at the beach in addition to a relaxed visit to the incredible Oía.
If it is not possible to have 3 days, with two days you can also see the most important and interesting of the island, focusing on Fira and Oía, in addition to some of the most famous beaches.

1-day Santorini route
